How to grow Elingamita johnsonii in NZ

Elingamita johnsonii prefers a warm, frost-free climate and thrives in well-draining, fertile soil. In New Zealand, it should be grown in a sheltered spot with filtered sun or light shade, away from cold winds and frost. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds, and water regularly during dry periods without overwatering. It responds well to organic feeding in spring. In colder regions, Elingamita can be grown in large pots and overwintered in a greenhouse or conservatory.

Elingamita johnsonii care tips

Plant Elingamita johnsonii in a sheltered, frost-free location with well-draining soil and partial shade. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry periods. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feed annually in spring with a slow-release fertiliser or organic compost. Protect from strong winds and avoid exposure to frost, which can damage young growth. In cooler areas, container growing with winter protection is recommended.

Plant size, spacing, and growth rate

Elingamita johnsonii is a slow-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree that typically reaches 2 to 4 metres tall in cultivation, though it can grow taller in ideal conditions. It has a dense, rounded form with leathery leaves. For garden planting, space plants 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for mature spread and airflow. Growth is slow to moderate, especially in cooler climates, making it suitable for sheltered gardens or large containers.
