Dysoxylum spectabile Details

Dysoxylum spectabile, commonly known as Kohekohe or the NZ Mahogany, is a NZ native tree that grows up to 10 m tall and 4 m wide. Mature trees may have a trunk that can reach 1 m in diameter. It forms a rounded crown of large and glossy, green leaves held densely. Trees produce clusters of fragrant, white flowers through autumn and winter which result in orange fruits. Both the flowers and fruit are favoured by Tuis, Bellbirds, and other bird species. This tree grows best in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site, and will tolerate moderate frost and short period of dry. It does, however, require shelter and frost protection when young. Dysoxylum spectabile is commonly grown as a specimen in parks and larger gardens, included in native and revegetation plantings, or simply planted to attract birds.
