Rimu, commonly also known as Red Pine, is an iconic and slow growing tree found throughout New Zealand. It features two, quite distinct forms. The juvenile form has drooping branches which are densely clothed with short, light green, needle-like leaves that often take on bronze tones. During this phase it also grows with pyramidal shape which becomes more broad as the tree starts to mature some 20 years later. A mature tree has a broad crown and eventually reaches 25 m and 10 m wide with leaves that are now short and sharp. Red seed pods in autumn are produced on trees that are 15 years and older are great for attracting birds. Dacrydium cupressinum grows best when planted in full sun on well-drained site that does not dry out. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, humid conditions, and moderate wind. The mature size of a Rimu tree makes it more suited to revegetation plantings or for growing as a specimen in a large garden or park.
