Dacrydium cupressinum Details

Dacrydium cupressinum, commonly known as Rimu or Red Pine, is an iconic and slow growing tree found throughout New Zealand. It features two, quite distinct forms. The juvenile form has drooping branches which are densely clothed with short, light green, needle-like leaves that often take on bronze tones. During this phase it also grows with pyramidal shape which becomes broader as the tree starts to mature some 20 years later. A mature tree has a broad crown and eventually reaches 25 m and 10 m wide with leaves that are now short and sharp. Red seed pods in autumn are produced on trees that are 15 years and older are great for attracting birds. Dacrydium cupressinum grows best when planted in full sun on well-drained site that does not dry out. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, humid conditions, and moderate wind. The mature size of a Rimu tree makes it more suited to revegetation plantings or for growing as a specimen in a large garden or park. It can be maintained in a pot for several years before being planted out.

What Are The Common Names For Dacrydium cupressinum?

Dacrydium cupressinum has several common names, but some are more widely used than others. The most popular common name is Rimu and this is both widely used and recognised. Some less common names include Red Pine, Huarangi, and Southern Conifer, Puaka. Red Pine is not as commonly used nowadays and can be misleading as Rimu isn't a true pine tree. Huarangi is a Maori name for Rimu, but its more common meaning in Te Reo Maori is "to be drunk, intoxicated, mad, or deluded" or "dew". Southern Conifer, and Puaka are rarely used and not widely recognized.
