Corynocarpus laevigatus Details

Corynocarpus laevigatus, commonly known as Karaka, is a handsome, NZ native tree that features large and glossy, green leaves. The lush foliage is adorned with cream-green flowers in spring which result in fragrant and fleshy, orange fruit in summer. The fruit, however, are toxic to animals but not birds. It typically grows to 8 m tall and 5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It tolerates coastal environments and moderate frost once established. Corynocarpus laevigatus is commonly included in coastal gardens, planted as a screen or informal hedge, or grown as a lovely specimen. NB: any plantings must consider the risk to children and animals.

Corynocarpus laevigatus Distribution

Most botanists believe Corynocarpus laevigatus were originally native only to the northern half of the North Island. However, due to its cultural significance and use as a food source, Māori planted it near villages throughout the North and South Islands. This makes its precise indigenous distribution uncertain. You can find Corynocarpus laevigatus naturally occurring in many coastal areas of both the North and South Islands, as far south as Banks Peninsula and Okarito. It's common on the Three Kings Islands, Raoul Island in the Kermadecs, and the Chatham Islands. They thrive in coastal situations, often forming a major component of coastal forests. While it rarely dominates, you might also find it inland, especially near remnants of Māori settlements.
