Commonly known as Karaka, this is a handsome, NZ native tree that features large and glossy, green leaves. The lush foliage is adorned with cream-green flowers in spring which result in fragrant and fleshy, orange fruit in summer. The fruit, however, are toxic to animals but not birds. It typically grows to 8 m tall and 5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun or partial shade on a well-drained site. It tolerates coastal environments and moderate frost once established. The Karaka is commonly included in coastal gardens, planted as a screen or informal hedge, or grown as a lovely specimen. NB: any plantings must consider the risk to children and animals.
