Cornus kousa Doubloon is a small, deciduous tree grown for its impressive flowering and colourful foliage. Masses of showy, white flowers are borne in spring just as the new foliage begins to emerge. The flowers are followed by red berries in autumn which are great for attracting birds. The leaves emerge green with bronze tones in spring, age to become dark green, then develop colourful shades of orange and red in autumn before falling. It grows with an upright and somewhat broad habit to about 6 m tall and 4 m wide and can easily be contained with trimming. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry. Cornus Doubloon makes a lovely specimen and is a great choice for adding to a mixed planting, using as backdrop for smaller plants, or including in a cottage garden.
