How to grow Cornus kousa Chinensis in NZ

To grow Cornus kousa Chinensis successfully in New Zealand, choose a sunny or lightly shaded position that is sheltered from strong winds. This tree prefers moist, well-drained, fertile soil that’s rich in organic matter. Before planting, work in compost to improve soil structure. Water regularly during the first year to help it establish, especially through dry periods. Mulch around the base annually to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Feed in spring with a balanced slow-release fertiliser to support flowering and healthy growth. Prune only to remove dead or crossing branches, ideally in winter. Cornus kousa Chinensis is frost hardy and low maintenance once established, offering year-round interest with its flowers, autumn colour, and attractive form.

Cornus kousa Chinensis care tips

Cornus kousa Chinensis prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while the tree is young. Apply mulch annually to retain moisture and suppress weeds, keeping it clear of the trunk. Feed in early spring with a balanced fertiliser to promote strong growth and flowering. Minimal pruning is needed—just remove any dead or crossing branches in winter. This tree is frost-hardy and benefits from shelter from harsh winds to protect its flowers and foliage.

Tree size, growth rate, and spacing

Cornus kousa Chinensis typically grows to 4 to 6 metres tall and wide, forming a graceful, vase-shaped canopy. It has a moderate growth rate, gradually reaching full size over several years. For best results, space trees around 3 to 4 metres apart to allow room for their mature spread and to maintain good air circulation.
