Cornus kousa (Kousa Dogwood)

Cornus kousa is a variety of Dogwood grown for its impressive flowering and attractive form. Large and showy, white flowers adorn the tree in spring and are followed by red berries in autumn. It grows with a narrow, upright, multi-trunked habit, carrying dark green leaves. As autumn progresses, the leaves develop shades of red before falling. It typically grows to 5 m tall and the same wide. Cornus kousa makes for an excellent specimen tree and is great for including in mixed plantings, for lining an entranceway, or planting in a courtyard.

How to grow the Cornus kousa Dogwood in NZ

Cornus kousa, or Kousa Dogwood, grows well in New Zealand when planted in a sunny or partially shaded position with fertile, free-draining soil. Choose a sheltered site protected from strong winds and frost, especially while young. Plant in spring or autumn, and water regularly during the first two years to help establish a strong root system. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly in winter to remove damaged or crowded branches and enhance its attractive form.

Cornus kousa tree care tips

Cornus kousa is easy to care for in New Zealand with the right conditions. Plant it in full sun or partial shade with fertile, free‑draining soil, and water regularly while establishing. Once mature, it only needs watering during extended dry spells. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed growth, keeping mulch clear of the trunk. Prune lightly in winter to remove damaged or crossing branches and to maintain a tidy shape. Protect young trees from harsh wind and frost.

Tree size, growth rate, and spacing

Cornus kousa typically grows 4–7 m tall and 3–5 m wide, forming a graceful, vase-shaped tree. It has a moderate growth rate, usually reaching near-mature size within 7–10 years under ideal conditions. Space trees 4–5 m apart to allow full canopy development, good airflow, and ease of maintenance.
