How to grow the Cornus 'Greenvale' tree in NZ

Cornus 'Greenvale' grows best in full sun or light shade in a warm, sheltered spot with moist, well-drained soil. It thrives in New Zealand conditions and produces long-lasting green-cream flowers in late spring, followed by red strawberry-like berries and rich autumn tones. Plant with compost, water deeply during dry periods, and mulch annually. Prune in late winter to shape and remove dead wood. This hardy and attractive dogwood adds year-round interest and is well suited to gardens across NZ.

Cornus 'Greenvale' care tips

Cornus 'Greenvale' requires a sunny or lightly shaded, sheltered position with fertile, well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while establishing, and mulch yearly to retain moisture. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support flowering. Prune in late winter to shape and remove dead or damaged growth. Watch for pests like aphids and treat early if needed. Ensure good air circulation to prevent fungal issues. This variety is hardy and tolerates light frost, making it low-maintenance once established.

Tree size, growth rate, and spacing

Cornus 'Greenvale' grows to around 3 to 4 metres tall and 2.5 to 3 metres wide, forming a rounded, layered shape. It has a moderate growth rate, reaching its mature size over several years. For best results, space trees approximately 2.5 to 3 metres apart to allow full canopy development and airflow between plants.
