Cornus florida

Cornus florida is grown for its lovely flowering and attractive form. Masses of showy, single, white flowers are borne in spring and are followed by red berries in autumn. It grows with a broad, somewhat pyramidal habit, carrying dark green leaves which develop interesting shades of red before falling. It typically grows to about 6 m tall and the same wide. Cornus florida makes for an excellent specimen tree and is great for including in a mixed planting or using in an avenue planting.

How to grow Cornus florida in NZ

Grow Cornus florida in a sunny to partly shaded location with fertile, moist, and well drained soil. It prefers slightly acidic soil conditions and thrives best in a sheltered spot away from harsh winds. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and protect roots from heat. With consistent watering during dry spells, this Cornus variety will flourish in NZ gardens and reward with stunning seasonal displays.

Cornus florida care tips

Cornus florida requires only light maintenance to perform well. Prune after flowering to shape the tree and remove crossing or damaged branches. Apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support growth and enhance flowering. Annual mulching improves soil quality and conserves moisture. With the right care, this tree will provide NZ gardeners with many years of spectacular blooms and seasonal colour.

Cornus florida size, spacing, and growth rate

Cornus florida usually grows 5 to 7 metres tall with a similar spread, forming a graceful, rounded canopy. It has a moderate growth rate and reaches maturity in 10 to 15 years. When planting, allow 4 to 5 metres spacing to give it adequate room to develop. Its medium size makes it suitable for both small and large NZ gardens while still providing strong ornamental appeal.

Landscaping uses for Cornus florida

Cornus florida is an excellent choice for use as a specimen tree in lawns, borders, or courtyards. Its spring flowers and autumn foliage make it a standout in any garden design. It pairs beautifully with azaleas, camellias, and rhododendrons, enhancing seasonal plantings. This variety of Cornus is highly valued in NZ landscaping for providing elegance and interest across multiple seasons.
