Cornus florida is grown for its lovely flowering and attractive form. Masses of showy, single, white flowers are borne in spring and are followed by red berries in autumn which are great for attracting birds. It grows with a broad, somewhat pyramidal habit carrying dark green leaves. As autumn progresses the leaves develop interesting shades of red before falling. It typically grows to about 6 m tall and the same wide and can be trimmed as necessary. Best results with this small tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry. Cornus florida makes for an excellent specimen tree and is great for including in a mixed planting, or using in an avenue planting. With trimming it is also well suited to planting around an outdoor living area.
