“First Lady” is a variety of Cornus grown for its lovely stature, spring flowering, and variegated foliage. Masses of showy, white flowers are borne through spring and are followed by clusters of red fruit in autumn. Both the flowers and fruit are great for attracting birds. The foliage comprises lush leaves that are variegated cream and green. The leaves develop colourful shades of red and purple in autumn before falling. It typically grows with a rounded shape to 3 m tall and the same wide, and can be trimmed as necessary. Best performance with this shrub is achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained, sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and periods of dry once established. “First Lady” makes for an excellent specimen and is great for including in mixed plantings, for lining an entranceway, or maintaining in a courtyard or cottage garden.
