Growing Coriaria arborea Successfully in NZ

Coriaria arborea is a fast-growing native shrub that thrives in full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. It’s commonly found in regenerating bush, forest margins, and stream banks throughout New Zealand. Plant in a sheltered position and water during dry periods to aid establishment. While it tolerates a range of conditions, avoid planting near livestock due to its toxicity. Tutu is ideal for native restoration, erosion control, and revegetation projects.

Coriaria arborea Care Tips

Coriaria arborea prefers full sun to partial shade and moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment, especially in dry conditions, to encourage strong root growth. Once established, it is tolerant of poor soils and light frosts. Pruning is generally not required, but can be done to manage size or shape. Be cautious when planting near animals or children, as all parts of the plant, particularly the seeds, are toxic if ingested.

Plant Size and Spacing

Coriaria arborea typically grows 2-6 metres tall and 2-3 metres wide, forming a bushy, upright shape. When planting multiple specimens, space them 1.5 to 2.5 metres apart to allow for natural spread and healthy air circulation. This spacing is ideal for native revegetation, streamside planting, and erosion control projects where quick cover and soil stabilisation are desired.
