How to grow Cordyline stricta in NZ

Cordyline stricta grows best in full sun to part shade and thrives in well-drained soil. It prefers a warm, sheltered spot but can tolerate light frost and coastal conditions. Water regularly while establishing, then only during extended dry periods. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Remove spent leaves to maintain a tidy appearance. Suitable for gardens or large pots.

Cordyline stricta (Slender Palm Lily) care tips

Plant in a sunny to partly shaded location with free-draining soil. Water consistently during the first year and in dry spells thereafter. Apply mulch annually to conserve moisture and control weeds. Feed with a slow-release fertiliser in spring to encourage lush growth. Prune off old or damaged leaves to keep the plant neat. Protect from heavy frost in cooler areas for best performance.

Plant Size and Spacing

Cordyline stricta typically grows 2–4 metres tall and 1–2 metres wide. For garden planting, space plants about 1–1.5 metres apart to allow room for their upright form and natural spread.
