Growing Cordyline obtecta Successfully in NZ

Cordyline obtecta thrives in full sun to light shade and prefers well-drained soil. It is well suited to coastal and windy environments, making it ideal for exposed or dry New Zealand gardens. Once established, it is drought and wind-tolerant, requiring minimal care. Plant in a sheltered spot when young, and water regularly during the establishment phase. With its bold, upright form and broad, glossy foliage, Cordyline obtecta makes a striking feature in native or modern landscapes.

Cordyline obtecta Care Tips

Cordyline obtecta prefers full sun to light shade and thrives in well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first year to help it establish, then only during extended periods of dryness. It’s highly tolerant of wind, drought, and coastal conditions once established. Remove old or damaged leaves to keep it tidy and apply a balanced fertiliser in spring to support healthy growth.

Plant Size and Spacing

Cordyline obtecta typically grows 3-5 metres tall and 1.5-2.5 metres wide. When planting multiple specimens, space them 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow for mature spread and airflow. This spacing helps maintain healthy growth and highlights the plant’s bold, upright form. Ideal for use as a feature plant, in native plantings, or along borders and coastal gardens.
