Growing Cordyline indivisa Successfully in NZ

Cordyline indivisa prefers cool, moist conditions and is best grown in sheltered, partially shaded sites with free-draining, fertile soil. Unlike other Cordylines, it does not tolerate drought or extended heat, so consistent moisture is essential, especially during dry periods. Young plants should be protected from strong winds and heavy frost. It’s ideal for temperate regions and higher altitudes.

Cordyline indivisa Care Tips

Cordyline indivisa thrives in cool, moist environments with partial shade and fertile, free-draining soil. Unlike other Cordylines, it dislikes heat and dry conditions, so regular watering is essential, especially in summer or during dry spells. Mulching around the base of the tree helps retain moisture. Protect young trees from harsh winds and frosts until they are established, and avoid planting in hot, exposed sites. The only pruning needed is to remove old or damaged leaves.

Plant Size and Spacing

Cordyline indivisa typically grows 3-6 metres tall with a spread of 2-3 metres. When planting multiple specimens, space them about 2–3 metres apart to allow for their broad foliage and mature size. Select a sheltered, moist site to promote healthy growth and ensure adequate air circulation. This striking tree makes a bold statement in native or shaded gardens.
