How to grow Cordyline 'Broadsword' in NZ

Plant in a sunny or partly shaded location with well-draining soil enriched with organic matter. ‘Broadsword’ stands up well to New Zealand’s climates, including coastal and urban settings, and tolerates light frost. Water the plant consistently during dry spells, especially while it is establishing, and mulch to retain moisture and control weeds. Remove old or damaged leaves to promote healthy new growth. Ideal for mixed borders or as a striking architectural focal point in gardens or large containers.

Cordyline 'Broadsword' care tips

Plant in full sun to part shade with free-draining soil. Water regularly during dry periods, particularly while establishing. Apply mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Feed in spring with a slow-release fertiliser to support lush growth. Prune off older or damaged leaves to maintain a clean, upright form. 'Broadsword' is hardy and low-maintenance but benefits from frost protection in colder areas.

Plant Size and Spacing

Cordyline 'Broadsword' typically grows 2–3 metres tall and about 1 metre wide. Space plants 80–100 cm apart to allow for their mature spread and to ensure good airflow.
