Growing Cordyline banksii Successfully in NZ

Cordyline banksii is a hardy New Zealand native that thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers free-draining soil. It tolerates wind, coastal conditions, and light frosts, making it ideal for a wide range of environments. Plant in a sheltered spot and water regularly during dry periods, especially while it is establishing. The only pruning required is to remove old or damaged leaves to keep the plant tidy.

Cordyline banksii Care Tips

Cordyline banksii is low-maintenance and well-suited to New Zealand gardens. Plant it in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while establishing, and mulch around the base to retain moisture. It tolerates wind, coastal exposure, and light frosts. Remove old or damaged leaves as needed to maintain a tidy appearance. Fertilise in spring with a general-purpose fertiliser to support healthy growth and vibrant foliage.

Plant Size and Spacing

Cordyline banksii typically grows 1.5 to 3 metres tall and has a spread of about 1 to 2 metres. When planting multiple specimens, space them 1 to 1.5 metres apart to allow for natural spread and good airflow. This spacing supports healthy growth and showcases the plant’s attractive, arching foliage.
