Cordyline australis Purpurea is a smaller version of the iconic, NZ native, Cabbage Tree. Plants have distinctive and attractive purple-bronze foliage with each stem crowned by a rosette of strap like leaves. From spring through summer, it bears clusters of fragrant, cream coloured flowers. It typically grows to 3 m tall and 2 m wide, performing best in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, dry periods, moderate wind, and cool climates. This Cabbage Tree makes a lovely specimen and is commonly planted in clusters. Cordyline australis Purpurea is commonly maintained in a container, included in mixed plantings, used to line a driveway or entrance, or planted against a bland wall.
