How to grow Coprosma arborea (Mamangi) in NZ

Coprosma arborea grows best in full sun or partial shade with well drained soil and good airflow. It tolerates coastal conditions, wind, and a range of soil types once established, making it suitable for many New Zealand gardens and restoration projects. Water regularly during establishment to encourage strong root growth and healthy foliage development. Adding compost to the soil at planting time improves soil structure and moisture retention. Applying mulch around the base helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Coprosma arborea (Mamangi) care tips

Coprosma arborea is very low maintenance and requires minimal ongoing care once established. Water occasionally during prolonged dry periods to support healthy growth, particularly while plants are young. Light pruning can be carried out during spring or summer to maintain shape or encourage denser branching if desired. Feed with a general garden fertiliser during spring to support vigorous growth and lush foliage. Remove any damaged or weak growth as needed to keep plants healthy and tidy.

Coprosma arborea (Mamangi) size, spacing, and growth rate

Coprosma arborea typically grows to around 3 to 6 metres tall and 2 to 4 metres wide with an upright bushy habit. It has a fast growth rate and quickly develops into a dense evergreen shrub or small tree in suitable conditions. For shelter planting or screening, space plants approximately 1.5 to 2 metres apart to allow healthy airflow and full development. Regular watering during establishment will encourage strong vigorous growth and rapid coverage.

Landscaping uses for Coprosma arborea (Mamangi)

Coprosma arborea is perfect for adding year round greenery, shelter, and native character to garden spaces. It works beautifully in native planting schemes, revegetation projects, shelter belts, and mixed shrub borders where the lush foliage creates a natural backdrop. Its hardy nature and fast growth make it especially useful for screening, erosion control, and low maintenance landscape designs.
