“Ruby Falls” is a small tree grown for its colourful foliage and pendulous growth. The glossy, heart shaped leaves emerge dark purple in spring and remain this colour until autumn. The foliage develops red and yellow tones as autumn progresses before falling. Masses of small, pink blossoms are produced as the foliage emerges in spring and are very aesthetic. It is usually trained as a single-trunked tree to about 2.5 m tall then allowed to naturally trail to give a graceful, weeping growth habit. Best results with this variety are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, reasonably sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry. “Ruby Falls” is commonly grown as a stunning specimen tree, planted to border an entranceway, included in a mixed planting, or planted around outdoor living areas.
