Cercis canadensis Silver Lining, commonly known as the Eastern Red Bud Tree, is a small tree grown for its lovely flowers and heavily variegated foliage. The heart shaped leaves are a striking dark green and white, and as winter approaches, they develop yellow tones before falling. Before the foliage emerges in spring, the tree is adorned with masses of pink blossoms. The display of flowers followed by rich foliage is outstanding. It grows as either a multi-stemmed or single-trunked tree with a broad and rounded canopy to about 4.5 m tall and 3.5 m wide. It performs best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, reasonably sheltered site, and is tolerant of frost and cool climates. This redbud plant is commonly used as a specimen tree, planted to line an avenue or border an entrance, added to cottage gardens, or included in a mixed planting. It is favoured by discerning landscape designers who want a modern and colourful element to a planting.
