Cercis canadensis Merlot, commonly known as Cercis Merlot Redbud, is a small tree grown for its colourful foliage and great form. The glossy, heart shaped leaves emerge dark purple in spring and remain this colour until autumn. As autumn progresses the foliage develops red and yellow tones before falling. Masses of small, pink blossoms are produced as the foliage emerges. It grows with a broad and rounded canopy to about 4.5 m tall and 3.5 m wide and can easily be contained with trimming. The Cercis Merlot Red Bud tree is commonly grown as a specimen, used in avenues, planted to border an entrance, or included in a mixed planting.

Cercis canadensis Merlot Details

Cercis canadensis Merlot, commonly known as Cercis Merlot Redbud, is a small tree grown for its colourful foliage and great form. The glossy, heart shaped leaves emerge dark purple in spring and remain this colour until autumn. As autumn progresses the foliage develops red and yellow tones before falling. Masses of small, pink blossoms are produced as the foliage emerges and are very aesthetic. It grows as either a multi-stemmed or single-trunked tree with a broad and rounded canopy to about 4.5 m tall and 3.5 m wide and can easily be contained with trimming. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained, reasonably sheltered site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and short periods of dry. The Cercis Merlot Red Bud tree is commonly grown as a specimen, used in avenues, planted to border an entrance, or included in a mixed planting.
