Carpinus betulus, commonly known as Hornbeam, is a deciduous tree grown for its foliage and interesting catkins. The leaves emerge light green in spring and age to become dark green with conspicuous ribs and a serrated edge. As autumn progresses, they turn lovely shades of yellow before falling. Flowers are borne in spring and develop into interesting catkins that hang among the leaves. This Hornbeam typically grows to 15 m tall and 7 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. It grows best when planted on a well-drained site in full sun and is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and dry periods. Carpinus betulus is a great plant for trimming into a hedge, growing as a specimen, adding to mixed plantings, or using in an avenue planting.
