How to grow the Callistemon salignus bottlebrush

To grow Callistemon salignus (willow bottlebrush), plant it in a sunny to partly shaded position with well-drained soil, though it can tolerate heavier or periodically wet soils once established. This hardy species is well-suited to a variety of conditions, including coastal and urban environments. Water regularly during the first year to encourage strong root development, then reduce frequency as it becomes drought-tolerant. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds, avoiding direct contact with the trunk. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage denser foliage. Use a low-phosphorus, native-friendly fertiliser in spring for optimal growth and flowering. Callistemon salignus typically grows 5–10 metres tall, with soft, willow-like leaves and papery bark that peels attractively. Its cream to pale pink bottlebrush flowers appear mainly in spring and summer and attract birds and insects, making it ideal for use as a feature tree, windbreak, or wildlife-friendly screen.
