Betula pendula Purple Splendour, commonly known as the European White Birch, is grown for its elegant form. It grows as a medium-sized, deciduous tree with slender drooping branches. It has papery, white bark which become black with age. Leaves are black-purple and contrast well with the white bark. Slender, green cones form in summer and age to brown and hang on the tree after the leaves have fallen. It will grow on damp soils and in partial shade conditions but best results will be achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site. Under these conditions, it can reach a height of 10 m and spread of 8 m can result. It is tolerant of frost, cold climates, and coastal conditions. Betula pendula Purple Splendour is an excellent tree for planting in groups. It will cast light shade making it a good lawn tree and with its showy bark and fine foliage it makes an excellent specimen tree.
