Betula maximowicziana, commonly known as the Monarch Birch, is grown for its lush foliage and impressive autumn colours. The dark green foliage is held densely and as autumn progress the leaves develop impressive golden tones before falling. Pendulous, yellow catkins (flowers) are borne amidst the branches in spring. It typically grows to 8 m tall and 5 m wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of cool climates, frost, and moderate wind.
