Beilschmiedia tawa (Tawa) – Majestic Native Tree for Biodiverse Landscapes

Tawa, Tawa Tawa Plant

Beilschmiedia tawa, commonly known as Tawa, is a large, evergreen tree endemic to New Zealand, reaching heights of up to 30 meters with a spread of 15 meters. It features mid-green, glossy leaves and produces masses of olive-shaped, purple fruits during autumn and winter, which are highly favoured by native birds, particularly the kererū (New Zealand pigeon). Tawa thrives in well-drained soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate a range of soil conditions, it does not perform well in extreme wet or dry environments. Young trees require protection from frost, but mature specimens are more resilient. Due to its slow growth rate, Tawa is ideal for long-term landscaping projects, including ecological restoration, park plantings, and as a specimen tree in larger gardens.

Tawa tree care guide

The Tawa tree is a slow-growing, evergreen native of New Zealand that thrives in well-drained soils and sheltered environments. It prefers full sun to partial shade and benefits from protection from frost in its early years. Tawa is best planted in areas with consistent moisture but not waterlogged conditions. Once established, it becomes more drought-tolerant and hardy. Regular mulching helps retain soil moisture and suppress weeds, and young trees may benefit from staking to develop a strong, upright form. Minimal pruning is required—just remove damaged or poorly formed branches as needed. Over time, Tawa grows into a tall canopy tree, making it well-suited for native forest restoration or use as a feature tree in large gardens, where it also supports native birdlife through its fruit production.

How big does the New Zealand native tree Beilschmiedia tawa grow to?

The New Zealand native tree Beilschmiedia tawa can grow to a height of 25–30 metres and develop a broad canopy spread of up to 15 metres when mature. It is a slow-growing, long-lived evergreen tree that typically forms part of the upper canopy in native forests. In garden or restoration settings, it will take many years to reach its full height, but its size and form make it ideal for large landscapes, parks, and reforestation projects.

Is Beilschmiedia tawa a bird attracting tree?

Yes, Beilschmiedia tawa (commonly known as the Tawa tree) is a bird-attracting tree. Its fleshy, purple fruits are especially favoured by native New Zealand birds, particularly the kererū (New Zealand pigeon), which plays a vital role in dispersing Tawa seeds through its droppings. By planting Tawa, you help support native bird populations and contribute to ecological restoration efforts, as it provides both food and habitat in native forest ecosystems.
