Taraire, Taraire Tree

Beilschmiedia tarairi, commonly known as the Taraire tree, is a unique, NZ native tree. Its prominent feature are the masses of olive-like, purple fruits through autumn and winter which are favoured by birds. Also of interest are the leaves, which, when young are covered in red-brown hairs which disappear as the tree ages. Taraire grows to about 20 m tall and 7 m wide and has a smooth, brown trunk. Taraire thrives in well-drained, fertile soils and prefers full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate light to moderate frosts once established, young trees benefit from protection against harsh conditions. Its slow growth rate makes it ideal for long-term landscaping projects, including ecological restoration, park plantings, and as a specimen tree in larger gardens.

Taraire tree care guide

Beilschmiedia tarairi, commonly known as the Taraire tree, is a majestic, slow-growing evergreen native to northern New Zealand that thrives in well-drained, fertile soils. It prefers full sun to partial shade and benefits from a warm, sheltered position, especially in its early years. Young Taraire trees are sensitive to frost, so they should be protected until established. Once mature, they develop greater resilience and can tolerate light frosts. Regular watering is important during the establishment phase, but the tree is relatively low-maintenance after that. Mulching helps conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Taraire produces dark purple fruit that attract native birds like kererū, making it a valuable addition to biodiversity-focused plantings. Its glossy foliage and broad form make it ideal for parks, large gardens, and ecological restoration projects.

In optimal conditions within mature forest environments, it can occasionally reach even greater heights. Taraire is a slow-growing species, making it best suited to long-term landscape planning, ecological restoration, and large garden spaces where its size and form can be fully appreciated.

Is Beilschmiedia tarairi a bird attracting tree?

Yes, Beilschmiedia tarairi (Taraire) is a bird-attracting tree.
