How to grow the Maqui Berry Tree (Aristotelia chilensis) in NZ

The Maqui Berry Tree grows best in warmer parts of New Zealand with mild winters, such as Northland, Bay of Plenty, and coastal areas. Choose a sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil enriched with organic matter. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while young. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Protect from heavy frost and strong winds. Prune lightly to shape and encourage bushiness. Plant at least two trees to improve fruit set through cross-pollination.

Maqui Berry Tree (Aristotelia chilensis) care tips

Plant the Maqui Berry Tree in a warm, sheltered location with full sun or partial shade and well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first few years. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed growth. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support growth and fruiting. Light pruning can help shape the plant and encourage bushier growth. Protect from frost when young, as this tree prefers mild, frost-free conditions.
