Madrone Tree

The Madrone Tree is the common name for Arbutus canariensis, an attractive evergreen tree renowned for its foliage, flowers, and berries. It produces lush and glossy, dark green leaves held off rigid branches. Clusters of red, bell-shaped flowers are borne amidst the foliage in summer and result in showy, orange berries in autumn which are great for attracting birds. It typically grows to 8 m tall and 6 m wide though can be trimmed as necessary. This tree grows best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site though it is tolerant of some wind, moderate frost, and coastal environments. The Madrone tree is fast-growing and makes for a lovely specimen but is also well suited to be used as an informal hedge, for avenue planting, or for including in a mixed planting in a large garden.
