Alnus subcordata Details

Alnus subcordata, commonly known as the Caucasian Alder, is both an attractive shelter and specimen tree. This fast growing, deciduous tree features glossy, bright green leaves. As autumn progresses the leaves turn brown and are retained well into winter along with the catkins. It grows with a conical shape to eventually reach 25 m with a spread of 18 m and responds well to trimming which encourages new growth. It will grow in almost any soil condition, except extreme wet or dry, and tolerates frost, cool climates, heavy soils, wind, and extended dry periods. Alnus subcordata is a versatile and attractive tree that is great for challenging locations where it is often trimmed into a hedge, used for screening, planted for shelter, or simply grown as a specimen.
