Alnus glutinosa Imperialis Details

Alnus glutinosa Imperialis is a variety of Alder grown for its attractive form and foliage. It is a reasonably fast growing, deciduous tree that will reach 15 m and 8 m wide. It carries finely divided leaves which emerge light green, darken to mid-green, then develop purple colourings in autumn before falling. Small, nutlike cones become more apparent when the leaves drop and remain on the tree through winter. This tree grows best on a well-drained site in full sun though it is tolerant of cold environments, coastal conditions, and heavy soils. Alnus glutinosa Imperialis makes for an attractive landscape specimen year-round and is also commonly used for screening and shelter, included in avenue plantings, or planting alongside waterways.
