Alnus cordata, commonly known as the Italian Alder, is an attractive shelter and specimen tree. This deciduous tree features glossy, bright green leaves. As autumn progresses the leaves turn brown but unlike most other deciduous plants the dead leaves are retained on the tree well into winter which creates an interesting feature. It grows with a pyramidal shape to eventually reach 25 m with a spread of 8 m and responds well to trimming which encourages new growth. It will grow in almost any soil condition, except extreme wet or dry, and tolerates frost, cool climates, wind, and extended dry periods. Alnus cordata is a versatile and attractive tree that is great for challenging locations where it is often trimmed into a hedge, used for screening, planted for shelter, or simply grown as a specimen.
