Allocasuarina littoralis

Black She-Oak

Commonly known as the Black She Oak, this is an evergreen tree growing to about 10 m tall and 4 m wide featuring slender, grey-green, needle-like foliage. The trunk has black markings and rough bark. Interesting red flowers often adorn the tree in spring. This tree grows best in full sun on a well-drained site and is tolerant of wind, coastal environments, frost, cool climates, and a range of soil conditions except at the extremes of wet and dry. It is widely recognised as an important tree for stabilising riverbanks, reducing soil erosion, and makes for an effective screening and shelter tree. This tree can be trimmed as necessary and tends to “bush up” following such activity.
