Albizia julibrissin 'Rosea' (Silk Tree)

Albizia julibrissin 'Rosea' is a variety of the commonly known Silk Tree, and is grown for its soft, fern-like foliage and clusters of long-lasting, fluffy, rose-red flowers in summer and extends until autumn. The foliage is mid-green, and the sensitive leaflets close up when touched and at night. This tree grows with a vase-shaped habit, producing a flattened, spreading crown as it reaches 6 m in height and 4 m in width. Growing Albizia julibrissin 'Rosea' Successfully in NZ

Albizia julibrissin ‘Rosea’, also known as the Silk Tree, grows well in warm, sunny locations with free-draining soil. It thrives in most parts of New Zealand but prefers sheltered spots away from strong winds and heavy frost. Water regularly, both during establishment and during dry spells. Prune lightly in late winter to shape and encourage new growth. Its fern-like foliage and pink, silky flowers make it an attractive choice for feature planting in larger gardens.

Albizia julibrissin 'Rosea' Care Tips

Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and shelter from strong winds. Water regularly during the first year and in dry conditions. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Prune in late winter to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and flowering. Protect young trees from heavy frost until well established.

Plant Size and Spacing

Albizia julibrissin ‘Rosea’ typically grows 5–7 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide. Space trees at least 4–5 metres apart to allow for their broad canopy and natural spread.
