Growing Albizia 'Red Silk' Successfully in NZ

Albizia 'Red Silk' thrives in New Zealand’s warmer regions when planted in full sun with free-draining soil. It prefers a sheltered spot away from strong winds and heavy frost to protect its delicate foliage and striking red-pink flowers. Water regularly during dry periods, especially while establishing, and apply mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Light winter pruning helps shape the tree and promote healthy growth. It’s an excellent choice for creating a tropical or exotic garden feature.

Albizia 'Red Silk' care tips

Plant in full sun with well-drained soil and shelter from strong winds. Water regularly during dry spells, especially in the first year. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and reduce weed growth. Prune lightly in winter to shape the canopy and remove any dead or damaged wood. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to encourage healthy foliage and flowering. Protect young trees from frost until well established.

Plant Size and Spacing

Albizia 'Red Silk' typically grows 5–7 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide. Space trees at least 4–5 metres apart to allow for full canopy development and good airflow.
