Albizia julibrissin (Mimosa Tree)

5 from 1 customers

Albizia julibrissin, commonly known as the Mimosa Tree, is a popular tree owing to its delicate foliage and showy flowers. The fern-like foliage is mid-green, and the sensitive leaflets close up at night or when touched. The foliage is adorned with fluffy, rose-red flowers from summer through autumn, which transform the tree as it grows to 6 m tall and 5 m wide. Albizia julibrissin is commonly planted as a specimen in medium to large-sized gardens, used as a backdrop for smaller plants, or planted in avenue plantings to provide shade around the barbecue and other outdoor living areas.

Growing Albizia julibrissin Successfully in NZ

Albizia julibrissin, commonly known as the Silk Tree or Mimosa, grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. It thrives in warmer parts of New Zealand and prefers a sheltered position protected from strong winds and heavy frost. Water regularly during dry spells, especially while the tree is establishing. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly in winter to shape the canopy and encourage healthy growth.

Albizia julibrissin care tips

Plant in a sunny, sheltered spot with well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first year and in dry conditions. Apply mulch to retain moisture and reduce weed competition. Prune lightly in winter to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser to support healthy growth and flowering. Protect young trees from frost and strong winds until well established.

Plant Size and Spacing

Albizia julibrissin typically grows 5–7 metres tall and 4–6 metres wide. Space trees at least 4–5 metres apart to accommodate their broad canopy and allow for healthy air circulation and root development.
