Agathis macrophylla, commonly known as Pacific Kauri, is a large, evergreen tree native to the Pacific Islands. It grows straight and tall to a height of 40 m with a trunk that can reach 3 m in diameter. The canopy may reach 20 m in diameter. It has mottled, shedding bark and glossy green leaves that are 10 cm long, that are tough and leathery in texture, but shorten as the tree matures. Agathis macrophylla grows best in full sun on a well-drained site though it will grow in a range of soil conditions. It is important to protect young trees from frost and wind. The Pacific Kauri is commonly used as a specimen tree in a large garden and looks impressive when planted in clusters.
