Aesculus hippocastanum, commonly known as the Horse Chestnut, is a deciduous tree grown for both its flowers and foliage. It produces large and showy, upright sprays of white flowers tinged with red in spring which are followed by brown nuts in summer. The foliage comprises large and lush, dark green leaves which develop yellow tones in autumn before falling as it reaches 25 m tall and 15 m wide. Aesculus hippocastanum is commonly used as a shade tree or specimen in parks or large gardens. It is also suited to avenue planting or being incorporated into a mixed planting in a large garden.
