Yellow Buckeye

Yellow Buckeye is the common name for Aesculus flava, a large and rounded deciduous tree that grows to about 15 m tall and 10 m wide. The foliage comprises large, dark green leaves which age to yellow in autumn before falling. Through spring it bears masses of large and showy, yellow flowers which are held on slender stems. These complement the dark green foliage nicely. Flowers are followed by slightly prickly, husky capsules, each typically containing two or three nuts. NB: the nuts are poisonous. It grows best in full sun on a well-drained site and is tolerant of cool conditions and frost. Yellow Buckeye makes for a great addition to parks and for large gardens as both a specimen and shade tree.
