Ackama rosifolia, commonly known as Makamaka, is an elegant, NZ native tree that carries interesting foliage and flowers. The leaves are pale green, often red below, with new growth having a purple tinge. Clusters of small, cream flowers coat the plant in spring which is complemented with red-pink fruits towards the end of summer. It typically grows to 8 m tall and 2 m wide but can be trimmed as necessary. It will grow well in damp areas and partial shade but prefers full sun and a well-drained site that does not dry out for best results. The combination of foliage, flowers, and fruit makes Ackama rosifolia an attractive tree that is commonly used a specimen or included in mixed plantings.
