Acer caudatifolium Summer Surprise is a variety of the commonly known, Snakebark Maple, and is grown for its rich foliage, interesting bark, and great form. The lush leaves on this deciduous tree emerge pink with green splashes in spring, age to become variegated green and cream, then turn orange-red in autumn before falling. It grows with an upright and somewhat rounded habit to about 8 m tall and 5 m wide, though can be contained with trimming. Best results with this Maple are achieved when it is grown in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, and a range of soil types, barring extreme wet and dry. Acer Summer Surprise is commonly grown as a specimen in parks and larger gardens. It is also well suited to lifestyle blocks where it can be used for shade, shelter, and screening with the added advantage of fantastic colour.
