“Red Emperor” is an impressive Japanese Maple that features a rich display of colourful foliage. The lush foliage emerges a deep red colour, remains this way until autumn, then develops orange-yellow tones before falling. It grows with a vase-shaped habit and typically reaches 6 m tall and 4 m wide. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It will grow on a range of soil types but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. It is also tolerant of frost, cool climates, some wind, and coastal environments but will produce a better tree if it is protected while establishing. “Red Emperor” makes for a magnificent specimen and is ideal for adding to a mixed planting, planting to soften a bland wall, or for using anywhere the spectacular colours can be enjoyed.
