Acer platanoides Nigrum, commonly known as the Plane-Leaved Maple or Norway Maple, is a medium sized, deciduous tree with fantastically coloured foliage. The lush foliage emerges dark purple in spring, remains this way through summer, then develops orange and red tones in autumn before falling. In summer, clusters of small, orange-yellow flowers are borne and give rise to winged seeds called samaras. It grows with an upright, spreading habit and will eventually reach 15 m tall and 8 m wide. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, moderate wind, and will grow on a range of soil types but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. Acer Nigrum is a magnificent specimen that is ideal for large gardens, parks, or avenue planting, and providing great shade.
