Commonly known as the Plane-Leaved Maple, this is a large, deciduous tree featuring impressive autumn colours. The lush foliage emerges light green in spring, ages to dark green, then develops stunning yellow, orange, and red tones in autumn before falling. In summer, clusters of small, yellow flowers are borne and give rise to winged seeds called samaras. It grows with an upright, spreading habit and eventually reaches 20 m tall and 10 m wide. Best results with this tree are achieved when it is planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost, cool climates, moderate wind, and will grow on a range of soil types but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. This magnificent specimen is ideal for large gardens, parks, or avenue planting, and makes for a fantastic shade tree.
