Acer palmatum Ukon is a small and impressive Japanese maple owing to its rich display of colourful foliage. New leaves emerge pale green, age to light green, then turn yellow in autumn before falling. It typically grows to 2.5 m tall and the same wide, growing best in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frost and cool climates and will grow on a range of soil types but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry. Acer Ukon is ideal for adding to a mixed planting, growing as a small specimen, planting against a bland wall, maintaining in a container, or for using anywhere the spectacular colour can be enjoyed.
