Acer 'Tamukeyama'

How to grow Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' in NZ

Acer palmatum 'Tamukeyama' grows best in a sheltered position with morning sun or light shade and protection from strong afternoon heat. In New Zealand conditions it prefers well drained soil enriched with organic matter and slightly acidic in nature. Avoid exposed windy sites that can damage the finely divided foliage. Water regularly during dry periods while establishing, ensuring the soil drains freely to protect the roots.

Acer 'Tamukeyama' care tips

Acer 'Tamukeyama' is relatively low maintenance once established. Apply mulch in spring to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature, keeping it clear of the trunk. Feed with a balanced fertiliser in early spring to support healthy growth and strong foliage colour. Minimal pruning is required, simply remove dead or crossing branches in winter. Protect young plants from heavy frost in colder regions.

Acer 'Tamukeyama' size, spacing, and growth rate

Acer 'Tamukeyama' typically reaches around 2 to 3 metres tall and up to 3 metres wide, forming a graceful weeping canopy. Growth is moderate, making it ideal for smaller residential gardens and feature areas. When planting in the ground, allow at least 2 to 3 metres of space from buildings or neighbouring plants. Its cascading habit creates strong visual impact without overwhelming the landscape.

Landscaping uses for Acer 'Tamukeyama'

Acer 'Tamukeyama' is perfect as a feature tree where its elegant weeping form can be fully appreciated.
