Acer palmatum Bloodgood is a variety of Japanese Maple that features a rich display of colourful foliage. Leaves on this deciduous tree are dark purple-red and turn a fiery red in autumn before falling. Small, purple flowers are followed by red fruits in summer which adds extra interest to this tree. It grows with a somewhat broad habit to about 3 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained site. It is tolerant of frosts, cool climates, some wind, and will grow on a range of soil types, but will struggle at the extremes of wet and dry.
