Acer palmatum Beni Otake is a popular variety of Japanese Maple due to its rich display of delicate and colourful foliage. Leaves on this deciduous tree emerge red in spring and develop bronze tones before aging to green. At the same time new growth continues to emerge giving the tree an interesting multi-coloured display. As autumn progresses the foliage reverts back to red before falling. This tree typically grows to 3 m tall and the same wide, performing best when planted in full sun on a well-drained, semi-sheltered site. It tolerates frost, cool climates, short periods of dry, and grows well on a range of soil types, barring the extremes of wet and dry. Acer Beni Otake is commonly grown as a specimen, added to a mixed planting, planted against a bland wall, or used anywhere the spectacular colour can be enjoyed.
